Print ads in newspapers, flyers, phone books, etc. utilize your corporate identity to stand out from the crowd. Whether they are color or black and white, your ads need to make a statement and get looked at to help you achieve your goals.
How can you get your ad seen among so many others?
Studies show people look at these ad items first:
- Visuals - when a reader's eye sees your ad, they get a visual first impression before they read. Visual elements may include: graphics, photos, drawings, bullets and use of fonts.
- Captions - because people look at the visual first, they read the small captions that accompany those visual elements too.
- Headline - get your headline read by creating curiosity, offering to solve a common problem or including a key benefit you have to offer.
- Text - "While the words are the most important part of the copy, visual elements such as indentation, pull-quotes, bullet lists, and creative kerning and tracking can help to organize and emphasize the message of the body of the ad," designer and writer Jacci Howard Bear says. Don't forget, the text of your ad shouldn't talk about how great YOU are, but about how great you'll make THEM.
- Signature - make sure your contact information is clearly presented to encourage readers to take action.
